what does white spots on nails indicate? i have a crack in side or cnr of my lip/mouth, not a fever blister but its sore when open mouth? my lips not otherwise dry/chapped, what does this indicate? heard some1 say its a deficiency - if so of what?

Do you know whether the vits and minerals we buy from over counter are made in safe material? i.e. how do we know if the wrapping of the actual tablet or the capsule is not made of bad chemical substances? what words should we look out for when buying and which products are safe to take?

Dear Reader
White spots on nails indicate damage to the nail bed, air bubbles in the structure of the nail or in some cases a genetic tendency. White spots on nails are not due to vitamin or mineral deficiencies. The crack on the side of your mouth is probably angular cheilitis or perleche which is caused by a bacterial infection (Staphylococcus or sometimes Candida). It can be treated with an cream such as Bactroban. This condition is not due to vitamin deficiencies except in cases of severe malnutrition such as found in POW or refugee camps. The wrappings of vitamins and mineral supplements are usually made of inert products which have been tested exhaustively to ensure that there is no reaction between the wrapping and the contents. It is safe to take multivitamin and mineral supplements made by large companies who have good quality control systems in place. Ask your chemist which are the bigger manufacturers.
