Dear Sloan,

Cystic hygroma is uncommon but not rare in South Africa. There are several causes, including chromosomal defects in the foetus. The chances of having a healthy baby depend upon the underlying cause of the cystic hygroma, but in general, the risks of recurrence are fairly small. You should certainly go for genetic counselling, as these experts could clarify the situation for you.
