Our expert says:
Cycling is a very good form of exercise for you if the goal is to tone the legs and to lose weight. It's really important to understand that to lose weight, even around the stomach or thighs, you can't just do stomach or thigh exercises. That's because spot reduction does not happen. That is, you can't really try and reduce the fat around your stomach, thighs and abdominals by just doing exercises for those areas. This kind of exercise, using specific muscles only, actually burns fewer calories than exercising large muscles groups in dynamic cardiovascular exercise such as walking, jogging, running, swimming or cycling. In order to burn the fat, you need to do these types of cardiovascular exercises as least 4 - 5 times a week for at least 30 - 45 minutes. This will help to increase the amount of calories that you use and help to decrease your body fat.
So, cycling is a great form of exercise, because it's quite easy to get 45 minutes in (once you get into it, whether it's mountain biking or road riding, you will find that you can do hours and hours with ease, and it never really gets boring) and it's high intensity so you get a good workout. I would say go for it, but don't start out too hard, or you might run into problems later on. Start by training only every second day, and then later on, add on the third and fourth day a week, training on consecutive days.
