There have been papers written about this in medical journals, some calling it the Giogenes Syndrome, but more usefully, Hoarding. The problem can be helped, but obviously this needs the person herself to recognize that this is a problem and getting out of hand. A psychologist using CBT ( COgnitive-Behaviour Therapy ) is likely to be best able to help change this problem behaviour. Sometimes part of the problem can be that the person feels insecure financially and hesitates to part with anything for fear that they will find they need it tomorrow, and can't afford to replace it.
