Cape Townians or whoever is interested!

Someone please remind me why I bought a house in the Northen Surbubs instead of South, in Cape Town. I travel from Oosterzee to Claremont every morning.I use to drive on the N1 but got sick of traffic and decided to use the train. It’s only been a week but maan am so gatvol of the long faces and nasty looks from those who have a lighter skin colour than mine.

First of all, Metro rail has three 3rd class carriages and 10 first 1st class carriages. A lot of people who travel by train are not so well off so they will not afford to buy a 1st class ticket and they will have to buy 3rd class which is okay, but how do you explain it when all the 3 carriages are full in so much that there is no more space for other 3rd class passengers and the 1st class carriages has not more than 5 people in each carriage. Must these passengers wait another 30 minutes for the next train or they can use the available space on 1st class? No because they paid less than their fellow passengers.

Those who are impatient like myself resort on boarding the 1st class and tolerate the disgusting looks from other passengers. Why should people behave this way? Sometimes they don’t even know that you don’t have a 1st class ticket but they will give you the “what the hell are you doing in this carriage” look. Please people get used to the fact that some of the dark coloured skin can also afford 1st class these days.

The moment they see those who work for the building contractors boarding the 1st class they start clutching on to their handbags and briefcases. Do they see a criminal every time a dark skin guy enters the carriage?

I don’t even want to go to the issue of language. I understand basic Afrikaans, remember we were forced to learn this language, I overhead another woman telling her neighbour that the guy who was standing beside her has a bad breath and he is shouting. Excuse me! That is how other people talk, although it will seem as if they are shouting to you, but believe me they are not. So should they try and accommodate you because you get irritated when they talk, that is bull! There are also things that irritate the other group about you as well, or you thought that everything you do is soooo perfect, what about your seating habits, one person occupies a space for two people because they prefer to leave a space inbetween. It irritates us if you didn’t know but we are not going to give you nasty looks for that, we learned to live with that, why cant you!

Have you ever been on a train to Mitchells Plain or Khayelitsha? Passengers here respect each other and are considerate of their fellow passengers, even the train to the Southern Surbubs for that matter.

I’m forever tense and stressed on the train from Bellville to Cape Town via Monte Vista and I get a relief when I board a train to Simons Town/Retreat/Fishhoek again. Passengers are more friendly and at least that is when you can see the smiles on the faces in the morning.

When are we all going to change, and not see ourselves as better than the other groups, or more so to learn from and tolerate each other. I am sure we can do better than this, we can make South Africa work for all of us and stop being so 1948!

Guys,

Life is what you make it. Yes we have our differences. That is what makes each of us unique. What happened in the past in nothing less than dispicable. It should never have happened.

There were people on both sides that suffered, however the white women and children were not gunned down. (by the way I am white).

I have alot of friends and they are from all colours and creeds and
do you know what the best thing is? EACH PERSON is unique, and it does not have so much to do with their skin colour!

Look in the mirror and examine your flaws before seeing the flaws in others! In Afrikaans --- Haal die balk uit jou eie oog, voor jy die splinter uit iemand ander sin haal-----

I see a wonderful future for South Africa!!! AND I am going nowhere, I love my country and I am commited to make it work.

I think black and coloured people are pretty cool and I'm so so glad that now its just perfectly fine to have friends of all colours and its perfectly acceptable - it was just too stupid for words before. As far as our kids are concerned - those who have no idea what it was like in the apartheid era - well they're just coping fine and accept things far easier than our generations of that era. By the way - I find that in the western cape - specifically the small towns - africaans is spoken by the majority and if you speak in english (which I do most of the time), the coloured people don't seem too happy about it almost to the point of being rude in some of the shops. I've spoken in english and been told by coloured kids that "dit is an afrikaans se dorp die - nie engels nie" I believe that africaans is their language - and they are very very proud of it

The point I made is that the although the most commonly used language in teh Cape is Afrikaans - it was not forced. It is still the MOTHER TONGUE of most CT people

Afrikaans was forced on blacks period!!! there is no one black who is proud to use the Holland lanuage, afterall those people are descendents of blacks and whites as to how did intimacy happen between the master and the servant, only the devil knows!!!

CM-still I fail to understand..I never said we shout becos of Afrikaans...but I said according to white people we shout when we speak.

Afrikaans was forced on us,remember the march where Hector Petersen was shot dead? It was the march against the usage if the language as the medium of instruction in schools.

So please rephrase before I say smthng else about your IQ

Echelle, if you don't know what you are talking about just shut up! Sheeeeesh you irritate me with your comments!! Seriously, don't you have ANY work during the day?
I have known for a long time about the afrikaans people were forced to speak back in the day. And I grew up on a farm, so the "shouting" is nothing new to me. I actually think it's quite clever, their race would be able to tell who is skinnering immediately! (Joke) But seriously, it's not that bad people!! I seriously think that the black race has more respect for each other than we whites do! It's shocking to se how some people treat their own race.
Gatvol, it's sad but it's true. Most white tannies and omies still can't come to terms with the New South Africa. The best is just to grin and bare... but good luck anyway!! I seriously hope this land will get on track, but then that's wishful thinking for you!!
Hopeful, are you only scared of black men? Shame man, you should watch the news sometime. It will shock you!
And Echelle, seriously, do you think that you are any better than the 2 skinnering Tswana women with everything you say on this forum and all of the judgement you throw around? Guess again girl!!
People please let's not start the racial thing again, it can go on forever and the posts will probably get deleted!!

"A lot of white people are kind hearted and treat black people like they were white!"

So I must be grateful for being treated as "White"

Echelle-Please shut up you dont know what you are talking about and as suggested please go and read more about SA History you are so blank when it comes to it,and you come here and utter stinking shit!

Hopeful-why are you still in SA if it sucks! You are probably one of those who associate crime with Black!

I never said all white people..In my posting I said Northern Surbubs..I know there are reasonable white people out there including my colleagues.

The other day a woman was buying groceries at the store and there were 2 black women also - they thought she couldn't understand Tswana, but in Tswana they said "look at this stupid white kaffer", so now, blacks aren't that innocent are they?

Whites don't whisper, we just talk normal to each other without raising our voices - if you whisper (something totally different)
THEN you are skindering....... ?!? Or saying something in private that you don't want the world to know.......
WHAT IS WRONG WITH THAT??????????????

Gatvol - maybe I didn't care to know such things! It's not only the black people that suffered in the past!! White women and children also suffered - do you know the song De la Rey? Or don't you know what the guy is singing about?

Don't talk about whites in general please, because that is where your problem lies! A lot of white people are kind hearted and treat black people like they were white! If one white person treat you like crap then you think we are all racists!

And the woman that complained about the bad breath - that's not our problem and not yours! We all sometimes complain about someone else - white about whites, white about blacks, blacks about blacks and blacks about whites!

I think the worse racists are black people! We don't hate you like you hate us - but we are starting to hate you more and more each day because you think you OWN South Africa!!

Where do you come from, if you dont know in this time and age that Black people were forced to learn Afrikaans at schools by the then Gvt.

Even if the guy did have bad breath she shouldnt have embarassed him by telling people who have noticed!

It doesn't mean WE are shouting just because you think we are.So your whispering is the right way as per you?

WE dont complain about your whispering becos WE know thats what and how you are.

We all have our views but we can reach consensus.

yes we where forced to speak afrikaans,How do you explain the fact most black people can speak Afrikaans and not english especially in Cape Town. Why did Hecter pietersen get killed in '76.Certainly the is proof that we where forced to speak afrikaans. For your education ?!? to go whispering amoung other people in an african culture is rude as it is taken as gossiping.

South Africa will work if we learn other cultures and learn to tolerate and respect each other and stop looking down to others just because they of darker skin than yours.

Geez!! Have you ever thought about this - that we whites are also gatvol! Gatvol that everytime we even look at you without a smile we are called racists! I'm white and other whites also sometimes look at me as if I'm not welcome - they are called snobs or it's just the way they always look. Sometimes people that always look grumpy turned out to be the most sweetest kindest people I've ever known! Never judge a book by its cover - if they look at you without a smile it doesn't always mean that they are racists or that you're not wanted there - hou op so fyngevoelig wees!

Is the fault not maybe with you!! That you see things that are not really there maybe?? If people don't smile doesn't mean they are racists!! White folk just don't sit and grin the whole day - we like our space - hate it if even another white would come and sit next to you because there IS other seats!! Why then sit on top of me??
Forced to learn Afrikaans?? Where do you get that from??
Maybe the guy DID have bad breath and yes...... why do you have to always speak loud ?? The person is right next to you....
If WE have to respect you bacause that's the way you are, you speak loud (fail to see that you don't see it as shouting) respect US then too, we talk soft and that is what we are used too?????

South Africa will never work because we all have our own views!
