Dear Sassy
A calorie is the non-metric measure or unit of energy. If a food contains 10 calories, it means your body will have to burn 10 units of energy to metabolise this food. We need a mixture of low-calorie (salads, fat-free yoghurt, etc) and high-calorie foods (salad oil and margarine) to stay healthy. If you need to lose weight you would cut down on the high-calorie foods such as fats and eat more low-calorie foods. According to the SA Food Tables, 100g of cooked brown rice contains 111 cal , while 100g of white cooked rice contains 129 calories, so the brown rice when cooked has the lower energy content. The brown rice is also better for losing weight because it has a higher dietary fibre content.
