Hi there

Your resting heart rate can be taken as described below. However, you can take it for a full minute rather than for 10 seconds and multiplying by 6.

For exercise:
It is recommended that you exercise in your Target Heart Rate (THR) range, which is at about 60 – 80% of your maximum heart rate (HRmax).

Your Estimated HRmax = 220 – Age

To measure your heart rate whilst exercising, place two fingers (not your thumb), over your wrist pulse and count for 10 seconds. To obtain your pulse rate per minute, multiply this figure by six. Alternatively, you can measure your pulse on your neck, next to your voice box (larynx).

Refer to the table below to see what your training heart rate should be.

AGE HR max TARGET HEART RATE RANGE(beats per 60s) TARGET HEART RATE RANGE(beats per 10s)
20 – 29 191 -200 120 – 160 20 – 27
30 – 39 181 –190 114 – 152 19 – 25
40 – 49 171 –180 108 – 130 18 – 24
50 – 59 161 –170 102 – 120 17 – 22
60 – 69 151 –160 96 – 115 16 – 21
70+ Less than 151 90 – 106 15 – 20

I hope this helps.
