Calcium suplement

Dear Doc

How much calcium should a 70 year old male take per day? Is a supplement necessary? He eats a fair amount of dairy products and takes a multivitamin (Supradyn Complete) as well as one Slow mag tablet per day.

Dear Ans
The RDA for calcium for this age group is 800 mg per day. 1 cup of milk will already supply 300 mg and if he eats 30g of cheese he will obtain another 300 mg. If you think that he is not getting sufficient calcium then he could take Caltrate every second day or even just 3 times a week should be sufficient.
