bleeding in early pregnancy

I was hoping to get some advise...

I am approximately 7 weeks pregnant and experienced some bleeding on Saturday (it was really really very little though). I went to casualty and all appeared to be fine. They suggested that I see my regular gynae asap. I have read that bleeding during early pregnancy is not uncommon, doesn't always indicate a miscarriage, and normally settles down.

What causes this to happen though?

It is called a threatened miscarriage. 80% of these will settle down and carry on normally.
