bladder problem?

Hi Doc
I have a 6 year old weimeraner bitch. She was sterilized when she was about 1 year old. We noticed that she seems to be leaking urine when she lies down. We can not find any visible blood in the urine. Could this be a bladder infection? Is there anything we can do to assist her. She eats and drinks well and does not seem ill. We also watched her urinating, and it does not seem to be a problem.

It sounds as if she may have a weak sphincter that may respond to treatment. There is a syrup that can be given daily (once or twice) to help increase the muscle tone and stop the leaking. The treatment is usually very effective and can be reduced to a minimum dose over a period of time.

This is most likely to be a pretty common hormonal problem, which can be very easily helped with medication obtainable from your vet. Spayed bitches are susceptible to this. Talk to your vet - the chances are it's an easy one to solve.
