Bipolar and mania

I was reading on the internet about bipolar disorder. Is it true that manic or hypomanic episodes can manifest themselves as high irritability and a depressive type episode rather than mania in terms of excessive good mood and increased energy etc?

Obviously this condition is complex, and interplays with a person's individual style. Irritability is common in manic phases as well as in depressie phasees. And Manic phases also have a suicide risk, and include very unrealistic evaluations of the situation and of one's behaviour.
