Dear Geri,

Usually, when headaches and backache are related, there is a strong element of muscle tension or muscle spasm present. This is the most common cause of both conditions. The is also a tiny muscle in the ear, that is attached to the ear drum – if this muscle is pulling too hard, it is possible that the eardrum may be gradually stretched, leading to deafness. But there are many other causes of headaches, backache, and deafness, and they may not be related in your mother’s case. As muscle tension may be the cause of all three problems, I would want to first make sure whether there was such a problem, but at the same time, we have to be sure that there are not other influences. To get to the root of the problem you need what is called a “multidisciplinary” examination. There are many different structures in the head and neck, all of which can be involved in the headache process, and no single specialist has all the knowledge necessary to make a comprehensive assessment and diagnosis. For this reason, the combined the expertise of different specialists who would normally treat headache patients in isolation, is co-ordinated into a single more comprehensive body of knowledge. This enables a more comprehensive treatment plan, in which all the contributing factors are addressed. Often, when the headache is successfully treated, the backache also improves. If the headache is successfully treated, and the back problem persists, then an orthopaedic surgeon should be consulted.
