baby Q

hi, my 14 month old used to be a really good eater, eating all normal family food, vegetables, and all that. Then he got sick about 6 weeks ago and his appetite decreased. Since he is better, he seems to prefer "baby" food, so it's yogurt and custard for him. He refuses to eat family food, just turns his head away. He will eat finger foods, but only egg, cheese, tomatoes, sausage, banana, and sometimes toast. And this is it!! It is all very high in protein. He still eats pro nutro baby cereal and 600ml full cream cow's milk a day. Any suggestions? his weight is good and he is not starving, just not quite eating what he should be!

Dear Muffin
It is a well known phenomenon that small children revert to an earlier stage of eating during and after an illness. Please be patient with the child and encourage him gradually to return to eating the foods he previously liked. To check what a young toddler needs to eat and in what quantities, click on 'Child' and then on 'Nutrition' and read the articles on 'Diets for toddlers'. Don't stress or create tension around eating. From what you mention, he is eating a wide variety of foods and will get back to the more 'adult' ones in a while.
