Our expert says:
Artificial sweeteners like aspartame and saccharine are not actually harmful if used in moderate amounts. Aspartame has the potential to be harmful to people who suffer from an illness called phenylketonuria. This is a rare condition and such patients react to an amino acid in Aspartame called phenyl alanine (which is also found in meat, milk, etc). So if you use these sweeteners sensibly there should not be a problem, just don't drink litres and litres of artificially sweetened cold drinks every day - Moderation is the key.
