Anti- ageing products a waste of time

My mother was told by her dermatologist that anti ageing products do nothing for wrinkles, and the only thing that can help the effects of ageing is surgery. Do anti ageing creams work towards reducing the effects of ageing (preventing and softening wrinkles) or are we just wasting our money?

Hi Moneypenny, thank you for the question.

Your Mom’s dermatologist is most probably correct with most of the “anti-ageing products” on the market today.

However, no one can deny (including dermatologists) the studies that have been performed with certain ingredients and their benefits for the skin. Specifically, and as mentioned in previous answers, the following ingredients should be looked for in your topical products of choice (remember that concentration of the ingredients also are important):
Alpha hydroxy acids: glycolic acid
Anti-oxidants: vitamin A, vitamin C, Idebenone
SPF (30 or higher) that contains zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide – this being a very important point as the effects of the sun has been shown to increase ageing (including wrinkles).

As regards the comment “only surgery will help the effects of ageing” nothing could be further from the truth. Well known plastic surgeons (Dr J Caruthers, Dr S Dayan, etc.) and dermatologists (Dr A Caruthers, Dr Kent Remington, Dr S Fagien, etc) all concur that combination treatments and particularly non surgical cosmetic treatments are vital for the overall success of a cosmetic result. Today a celebrity walking down the red carpet does not rely on one treatment alone (such as surgery) to look the way he or she does. In fact numerous studies have shown the benefits of combination treatment regimes including topicals. At the American Society of Plastic Surgeons Annual Meeting as early as 2005 a consensus was reached that surgery should be delayed for as long as possible with the use of all of the medically proven non-surgical arsenal/treatments available to us.

I hope the above clears the answer about non-surgical treatments and please feel free to pass this answer to your Mom.
