Our expert says:
Calories (cal) or Kilocalories (kcal) are so-called nonmetric units of energy. In other words, kcal are used to measure how much energy is found in various foods and how much energy we use up when we exercise or rest or work. The so-called metric unit of energy is the kilojoule (kJ). In general it is recommended that relatively inactive adult women ingest 2000 kcal per day and that inactive adult men ingest 2500 kcal per day. People who are physically very active would need to ingest more energy, for example up to 3000 kcal per day for very active men.
