Problem with big toe

Hi Doc, a few weeks ago I noticed that I had a small lump on the right corner of my nail bed on my big toe. After researching on Google. I thought it might be an ingrown toe nail. When left alone the toe is fine however if I bump it just slightly it swells, goes red and become extremely painful. It's been fine for some weeks now, but 2 days ago I wore some tight fitting shoes especially around the toe area and again it swelled up so badly I couldn't even bend my toe. I found that with some bactroban and plaster it reduces the pain and swelling the next day. Also when I removed my nail polish I found what looks like puss underneath the nail and it looks like the actual nail is lifting. Could it be an infection, absess or ingrown toenail and if so what can I do?
