Blood pressure and road safety

When it comes to road safety, it is important to know whether your blood pressure is normal. Uncontrolled blood pressure can lead to serious car accidents. While high blood pressure (hypertension) can lead to heart attacks and strokes, low blood pressure (hypotension) can cause dizziness, blurred vision and confusion. All of these are dangerous conditions when focus is needed in dangerous activities such as driving a car.

Take action:

Check your blood pressure regularly and find out whether any close relative has high blood pressure as this could place you at an increased risk. If you are pregnant, take note that your blood pressure may increase during pregnancy, even if you never struggled with high blood pressure before. If you are on blood pressure medication, be aware of possible side effects such as nausea, drowsiness, blurred vision and reduced coordination which can impair your ability to drive. If this happens, ask your doctor if he or she can change your medicines to prevent the symptoms.
