South Africa has been creating jobs for the labour force it wishes it had, not the one that it has - and no political party has managed to address the problem meaningfully in its manifesto, writes Sifiso Skenjana.
The dire state of employment outcomes in South Africa is no reason for political grandstanding ahead of the elections, given that all provinces have shown an increase in joblessness – and all presented political party manifestos are at least two sandwiches short of a picnic when it comes to addressing the problem.
None of the manifestos have shown a textured understanding of the labour complex in South Africa, nor have they shown pragmatic pathways towards effective labour reconstitution, absorption and protection.
