One man was found dead in Bloubergstrand (in the vicinity of the Blue Peter Hotel) and another and three dachshund dogs were missing after going fishing in the area last night (14 May).
The Water Policing and Diving Services (WPDS) and Table View police are continuing an ongoing search for missing Pierre Lotter (23) from Kathu and three Dachshunds at the Bloubergstrand shoreline.
As Hein Köhne, National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) Melkbosstrand station commander told TygerBurger, at 19:30 on Tuesday 14 May NSRI Table Bay was alerted by concerned relatives of two men and their three dogs, who had last been heard from around 18:30 after going fishing in the Bloubergstrand area, on Kids Rock, during the afternoon.
“It was determined that the two men, aged 47 and 23, from Kathu, Northern Cape and their three Dachshund dogs had been fishing at Kids Rock, off-shore of Bloubergstrand, in the vicinity of the Blue Peter Hotel. NSRI Melkbosstrand activated crew, who responded to investigate and, after arriving in the area, following a brief search the 47-year-old man was found lifeless on the beach near the Blue Peter Hotel.”
CPR
NSRI medics initiated CPR efforts. CPR continued to be performed on the man while a search for Lotter and the dogs commenced.
“After all efforts to resuscitate the man were exhausted sadly he was declared deceased by paramedics,” Köhne said. “The body of the deceased man was taken into the care of police and Government Health Forensic Pathology Services. NSRI Table Bay crew joined NSRI Melkbosstrand, Police, paramedics, Fire and Rescue Services (including Fire rescue divers), the local coast watchers and BBSL lifeguards, in an extensive shoreline search for the missing man and the three dogs.”
It is still unclear what caused the death of the man.
The NSRI Melkbosstrand rescue craft, Rotary's Gift, was launched “and Metro Control dispatched the EMS rescue squad drone search and rescue team who conducted an extensive thermal aerial search,” Köhne said.
Two NSRI rescue swimmers and two lifeguards were deployed into the water to free dive search and to reach Kids Rock where a search revealed no signs of the missing man and the dogs.
Despite an extensive air, sea and shoreline search there remains no signs of the missing man and the dogs.
“It is believed that they were fishing from Kids Rock and that they had been there the day before, fishing at Kids Rock, as well,” Köhne said. “We believe that they had reached the rock at low tide but during the incoming high tide, that peaked at 20:30, we suspect that somewhere between 18:30 and 19:30, they may have tried to swim across the channel. Condolences are conveyed to the family and our thoughts are with them during this difficult time while a search continues for the missing man and for the dogs.”
Lotter is last known to have been wearing a cream coloured shirt. He can also be identified by tattoos on his inner arm. The family has requested privacy in this difficult time.
