Parliament on Thursday gave President Cyril Ramaphosa free rein to determine the amount political parties and independent candidates must declare, and how much money they can receive from one donor per annum.
The Electoral Matters Amendment Act came into effect last week Wednesday, with the upshot being that the regulations in terms of the Political Party Funding Act that sets a threshold - that all donations of R100 000 or more must be declared - and a limit - that parties may only receive R15 million from one donor per year - are scrapped.
In other words, since last Wednesday, there have been no limits on how much money political parties and independent candidates can receive, nor is there a threshold after which they have to declare donations. Any amount can be received, and the public will be none the wiser.
