HELLO, SUMMER!
THERE’S little to beat the feeling: the warm sun on your skin, the sound of kids splashing in the pool (or charging around under the sprinkler), sundowners on the patio, a fresh summer salad with a chop or piece of chicken straight off the coals.

Welcome, summer!
Our summer edition is jam-packed with information you need to help you make the most of life in sunny South Africa.
For those lucky enough to be heading for the coast there’s a handy guide to treating the bites and stings of nasty sea creatures; we have advice on how to save someone from drowning; and you’ll find all you need to know about the dangers of sunburn (whether you’re at the coast or not).
Well-known South Africans share their fitness programmes and a team of nutritionists takes a critical look at the promises of diet clubs and their weight-loss plans. Hope you find it all useful!
Then there are the in-depth articles on medical matters that are so central to the YOU Pulse success recipe. We know all doctors aren’t as keen on publicity as the late Professor Chris Barnard but the transplant team at the Wits Donald Gordon Hospital in Johannesburg take the cake.
It wasn’t easy for Marí Hudson to get them to tell us about the pioneering double kidney and pancreas transplants they’ve started performing for the first time in South Africa.
It was thanks to the relationships she built up over the years as medical reporter that she could get the story.
The operation offers new hope for diabetics and the article provides a fascinating glimpse into the wonders of the medical world.
Marí says getting the doctors to pose for our pictures was a small miracle in itself. She and photographer Johan Wilke, who takes most of the amazing pictures in YOU Pulse, spent hours setting it all up – even moving photographic equipment from one operating theatre to another to accommodate patients who suddenly needed to go under the knife.
They carefully planned each doctor’s place in the picture so they’d take up as little of the busy medics’ time as possible. A journalistic challenge but a triumph for YOU Pulse and a fascinating glimpse into the wonders of the medical world!
Many thanks for your letters and e-mails about the launch edition of YOU Pulse. We’re thrilled with the success of the first issue and grateful for your support.
Many of you phoned to say you’ve struggled to get hold of a copy.
It’s always difficult to get a new magazine onto the shop shelves but our circulation department is working hard at it.
Enjoy this issue. And as always, we’d love to hear what you think.
Warm summer wishes,
Esmarè
