December holidays are not only fun in the sun – for many learners in their final year of school, the month of December also spells a long and agonising wait for the final results.
The questions are endless: "What will happen if my name is not on the list? What will my parents say? What will my friends say? What will I do? What will happen if my marks are not high enough to do the courses I applied for?"

Generally the New Year is a festive period for most people, but a very difficult time for learners who have failed their final exams. Every year, there are reports of teens who attempt suicide when they hear that they have not passed.
But, let's face it, although failing this exam feels like a death sentence at the time, it certainly is not the end of the road. Many learners pass on a second attempt, or by means of correspondence courses. It is not essential to return to your old school to repeat your final year, as there are many other options.
And if you have just failed your final year, it might feel as if the world has come to an end, but twenty years down the line no one will even remember it. Despite how angry your parents might be right now.
But what should you do immediately? It is a good idea to speak to a counsellor or teacher at the school where the results are first made known. If you still feel desperate, see a GP. Most practices have at least one doctor on duty over the festive season. Make an appointment and see one if you are feeling very anxious or cannot sleep.
Phone a helpline if the abobe possibilities are not available. Speak to someone and for heaven's sake, don't do anything silly. Your life is worth a lot more than a final school certificate. - (Susan Erasmus, Health24)
