 Sexual myths
Sex – how much is enough?

This is not a topic people will generally raise at a dinner party. Not unless much wine has flowed or people feel they have something to brag about. How truthful are people when this topic is discussed? Or even when surveys are conducted?

People are having sex on average 96 times a year – that’s about twice a week – although men claim to make love more often than women with 103 sessions per year , compared to 88 for women. The most sexually active group is aged between 25 and 34, claiming to have sex 113 times per year. These statistics, from the Durex Annual Global Sex Survey, were released at the end of 2000.

The survey includes data from all the world’s main geographical areas and purports to reflect a global picture of sexual attitudes and behaviour among people aged 16 –55.

More than half the respondents (57%) claimed that they had sex at least once a week, while only 4% claimed that they had sex daily.

The most sexually active couples were the ones living together (146 sessions per year) as opposed to married couples who claimed to make love 98 times per year on average. Single people not in a relationship are much less sexually active (49 sessions per year).

Those in the age bracket 25-34 are more sexually active than 16-20 –year-olds (113 sessions as opposed to 89). The average age for across all respondents for losing their virginity is 18.

Despite 58% of respondents mentioning that the threat of HIV/AIDS made them change their sexual behaviour, the global average for number of sexual partners is still standing at 8,2. Nine in ten South Africans claimed to have altered their sexual behaviour, while only three out of every ten Japanese made similar claims. -
