Step 1 Make sure that you have not been infected with an STI before having sex with someone. Often a test is the only way to find out, as some sexually transmitted infections, like HIV, have no symptoms at all. Others can cause discharges or rashes, but these can also be symptoms of other conditions. It is best to go to the doctor to make sure.

Step 2 Choose your partner carefully. Someone who has had multiple sexual partners is far more likely to infect you with an STI than someone who has had only one or two monogamous relationships.
Step 3 Never have sex without a condom. This rule should never be broken, unless you have decided you want to have a child with your spouse/partner. Even then, an HIV test can do no harm.
