What is the Sexual Satisfaction Report?
“Sexual Satisfaction” is the first in a series of reports, following a global survey by Durex on sexual wellbeing.
What is the purpose of this report
The 2007 Durex Global Sexual Wellbeing Survey questioned more than 26,000 people in 26 countries about all aspects of their sex lives – including satisfaction levels.

In this first report we reveal how satisfied – or dissatisfied – we are as a nation with our sex lives. We have pinpointed the drivers of satisfaction, the problems people are experiencing and identified ways in which our sex lives can be enhanced.
By analysing and comparing national and global trends we have gathered important information on satisfaction and sexual health.
What are the key findings?
Overview
South Africans may have the most orgasms and more sex than most people globally but only half of us are fully satisfied with our sex lives.
But we are not alone: globally just 44% of all respondents claim to be happy with their sex lives. The Japanese are the least satisfied nation (15%).
The survey shows how our priorities towards sex are changing with South Africans looking to spend more quality time with their partners, introduce more romance and enjoy better communication and intimacy with their loved ones.
We would also like to feel less stressed and less tired.
Serious Issues
To achieve satisfaction, sex should be pain and problem free – but our findings show that unfortunately this is not always the case.
A third of South Africans have experienced painful sex at some point in their lives and more than half (52%) of women have experienced vaginal dryness.
Three in ten men have had difficulty getting an erection and 37% have had problems sustaining one.
On the positive side, two thirds of South Africans said they usually have an orgasm, compared to 48% worldwide. Globally, twice as many men as women regularly have orgasms with people over 65 most likely to reach ultimate satisfaction.
Mutual respect plays a vital role in a satisfying sex life – more than eight in ten people globally who are sexually satisfied say they feel they are respected by their partner. In South Africa 72% feel respected by their partners during sex.
However, 55% of South Africans would like to feel less stressed out and tired.
Light-hearted issues
South Africans have more sex than most. We average 120 times a year – compared to a global figure of 103. Greeks (164 times), Brazilians (145), Poles and Russians (143) have the most sex and the Japanese the least (48 times).
We also spend more time over it too – taking 20 minutes for each session compared to a global average of 18. Nigerians take the longest (24 minutes) while Indians have the quickest sex (13 minutes).
Nearly half (47%) would like to inject more fun into their sex lives by introducing role-play, sexual fantasies, bondage and giving anal sex.
Male vs Female issues
South African women, at 55%, are more satisfied with their sex lives than South African men (46%). This compares to 45% of women worldwide and 43% men.
Are these all the findings?
These are all the findings on sexual satisfaction but more reports will follow. From the 2007 Durex Global Sexual Wellbeing Survey we have collated a wealth of data and statistics which we intend to publish in stages over coming months. Future reports will focus on sexual experimentation, physical pleasure, emotional aspects of sex, first sex and sex education, culminating in the development of a model for sexual wellbeing.
