| More specialised than road cycling, the emphasis in track cycling is on speed, although endurance is also important. This sport can take place on indoor and outdoor tracks, or velodromes, which differ in size and dimension and are made of varying materials, ranging from wood to cement.
Track cyclists ride on specially designed bicycles. Unlike bicycles used for road riding, these lack multiple gears and brakes, having a single 'fixed' wheel i.e. they can’t free-wheel. They usually have lightweight frames and narrow tyres and wheels, with the tyres inflated to pressures far greater than those used in road cycling, to minimise friction. The bicycles are also designed to reduce aerodynamic drag caused by the machine itself and the rider's racing position.
