International Criminal Court (ICC) prosecutor Karim Khan has applied for arrest warrants for three Hamas leaders and two from Israel, which will oblige countries, including South Africa, to arrest and ship them to the ICC to stand trial.

Khan pointedly announced the application in a combined press release, saying it was critical to treat Hamas and the Israeli government the same for their alleged crimes.

"Let us today be clear on one core issue: if we do not demonstrate our willingness to apply the law equally, if it is seen as being applied selectively, we will be creating the conditions for its collapse," said Khan in a statement.
