Two Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) officers were hospitalised after a shootout with armed robbers in Cornelius and Delvers streets, Marshalltown, on Tuesday evening.
JMPD spokesperson Superintendent Xolani Fihla said JMPD Region F1 Operations Unit officers were conducting static patrols on Delvers and Albert Street in Marshalltown.
"They were approached by a member of the public who reported an ongoing armed robbery at a spaza shop in Cornelius and Delvers Street," added Fihla.
He said the officers made their way to the scene, where they were confronted by the suspects, who opened fire on them.
"The officers, who were also armed, returned fire. Unfortunately, two officers were injured during the incident," said Fihla.

According to the JMPD, the suspects were critically injured during the shootout.
Two firearms were recovered from the scene.
Fihla said the police were at the scene assisting with the investigation.
The police have been approached for comment, it will be added once received.
Meanwhile, the JMPD said further details about the incident would be made available once more information had been gathered.
"We would like to assure the community that we are doing everything possible to ensure the safety and well-being of our officers and to bring those responsible for this senseless act to justice," added Fihla.
