On Sunday evening, three alleged locals went missing in the surf at Summerstrand. Despite search efforts by the NSRI and other rescue teams, the bodies of a man and a woman were recovered and declared deceased. One adult man remains missing as police divers continue their search.
According to NSRI Gqeberha duty controller, Mike Whittal, at 18:19, Sunday, May 19, the NSRI Gqeberha duty crew, CWR (Coastal Water Rescue), EC Government Health EMS, and SAPS were activated following reports of three persons missing in the surf zone at Summerstrand.
Whittal said it is believed that they went missing in the surf while swimming.
"NSRI rescue swimmers and CWR rescue swimmers, the SA Police Services, Police Search and Rescue, and EC Government Health EMS responded.
"On arrival at the scene, NSRI rescue swimmers and Coastal Water Rescue rescue swimmers launched into the surf, conducting sweeping line free dive search efforts."
During an extensive sea and shoreline search, the bodies of two adults, a man and a woman, were located and recovered," said Whittal.
They were both declared deceased by EMS paramedics.
Whittal added that one adult remains missing, believed to be a man, and SAPS divers are continuing in an ongoing search.
"The bodies of the two deceased have been taken into the care of Police and Government Health Forensic Pathology Services."
Police have opened inquest dockets in respect of the two deceased.
