Avoid cruise ship illness

If you'd like to go on a cruise this summer, don't allow reports of cruise ship illnesses to spoil your plans, says the American College of Emergency Physicians.

Advance planning can help you avoid getting sick while on board.

Here's what to do:

  • Get the immunisations you need and preventive medicines for illnesses such as malaria.
  • Refill your medications and keep them in your hand luggage.
  • Check if your health insurance covers medical emergencies abroad.
  • Ask if there is a ship physician who is prepared to treat a range of illnesses and injuries, including life-threatening conditions.
