Kids risk computer injuries
Created: Friday, September 13, 2002
Children who use adult computer equipment, peripherals and furniture risk permanent, painful injury, a leading British ergonomics expert says.

Professor Peter Buckle, of the University of Surrey, UK, says computers, keyboards, mice and furniture rarely account for the size and needs of children. He says kids are at particular risk for repetitive strain injury, since children's bones and muscles are still developing.

Buckle says an analysis of more than 2 000 11- to 14-year-olds shows that 36 percent suffer serious, ongoing back pain. And those who suffer such pain as children are more likely to have similar problems as adults, Buckle adds.

He says manufacturers should make a concerted effort to design more user-friendly equipment for kids. And parents should monitor their children's' computer use, making sure that they take frequent breaks and maintain proper posture while online. – (HealthScout)
