Hunger and malnutrition, exacerbated by HIV, tuberculosis, malaria and other diseases, threaten to claim the lives of as many as 300 000 people in southern Africa over the next six months alone, public health officials warn.

The prediction comes from a meeting of officials from United Nations agencies and 10 regional governments in Zimbabwe this week.
World Health Organisation leader Gro-Garlem Brundtland said the spread of disease, combined with declining health services, have resulted in a lack of food for 14 million people across southern Africa.
Zimbabwe officials said in their county alone, nearly half of the population of 12.5 million need immediate help getting enough food. Among them are 1.6 million children under the age of five.
The meeting preceded the World Summit on Sustainable Development, held in South Africa. – (HealthScout)
