Certain medical schemes were taking the law into their own hands and meting out their own justice to allegedly fraudulent practitioners, the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPSCA) has said.

HPCSA registrar Boyce Mkhize told a press briefing that there were, 'horror stories' of medical schemes approaching practitioners who they suspected of fraud, and extorting money in exchange for their silence.
"The medical scheme industry has allocated powers unto themselves and authority that they do not have. We don't accept a system where a medical scheme creates their own justice system."
He said medical aids that did report fraudulent activities would receive priority. They would no longer have to wait in long queues and their complaints would be expedited.
Practitioners who had been approached by medical schemes for suspected fraudulent activities could also report these complaints to the council and would receive the same priority. – (Sapa, May 2008)
