Yellow fever in West Africa

Two people have recently died in an outbreak of yellow fever, and nine others were left seriously infected with an acute syndrome, which is believed to be yellow fever, the World Health Organisation (WHO) reported.

The two deaths were registered in the Republic of Mali, after laboratories confirmed that a three-year-old boy, had died of yellow fever.

The WHO has also reported that similar cases were identified in the Republic of Guinea, were nine people are seriously infected with an acute syndrome, which is believed to be yellow fever. The National Reference Laboratory of the Donka Hospital confirmed that six of the nine cases were yellow fever.

The nine cases were registered in the regions of Boke, Nzerekore, Faranah, and the City of Conakry in Guinea, from 3 October to 23 October 2005.

Strict measures to control outbreak
To help contain the situation in those regions, the WHO, and the European Community Humanitarian Office (ECHO) in Guinea are giving full support to the Ministry of Health in fighting the disease, as well as giving help in the implementation of new control mechanisms to minimise the spread of the disease.

A vaccination campaign has been carried out in Mali, were more than 300 000 people will be vaccinated. This immunisation campaign will be extended to all other areas in the country.
