Activists watching leaders

Aids activists took to the streets sporting a giant inflatable eyeball outside where world leaders were meeting on Thursday, to highlight how the global economic crisis spells out dire consequences for already weak healthcare throughout Africa.

The demonstration targets African leaders meeting at the Cape Town International Convention Centre for the World Economic Forum on Africa.

Protestors from Cosatu, Treatment Action Campaign (TAC) and other groups are using the eyeball motif used by activists at the G8 meeting in Scotland to signify the public was "watching" that leaders make good on their promises.

This comes in the wake of a report released by the World Bank in April showing that 70% of people receiving antiretroviral treatment (ARV) in Africa may see their access jeopardised in the next twelve months, due to the economic crisis.
