A day after the US Food and Drug Administration formally declared a new designer steroid illegal, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) said it was looking into retesting frozen urine samples from the 2002 Salt Lake City games for the drug, the Associated Press reports.

The FDA says little is known about the safety of the drug, known as THG (tetrahydrogestrinone). The US Anti-Doping Agency recently acknowledged the drug was being secretly used by candidates for the US Olympic team. Until recently, no test was available to detect THG.
Legality of retroactive testing
In declaring the steroid an illegal, unapproved drug, the FDA said Tuesday that manufacturers, marketers, and distributors would be subject to prosecution.
The IOC says it is asking scientists if the frozen samples are still viable, adding that its lawyers are studying the legality of retroactive testing. Don Catlin, who heads the Olympic drug-testing lab in Los Angeles where the samples are stored, has said that up to 300 samples still exist and could be retested, the AP reports. (HealthDayNews)
