Many people - especially the elderly - suffer unnecessarily from depression. The condition can be treated, so if you suspect someone you know is suffering from depression, encourage her to seek help.

According to Country Meadows Retirement Community in Pennsylvania, common symptoms include:

  • General feelings of sadness and hopelessness.
  • Diminished interest in most or all activities.
  • A change in appetite or weight.
  • A change in sleep patterns.
  • Fatigue or loss of energy.
  • Feelings of worthlessness or excessive guilt.
  • Diminished ability to concentrate; poor memory.
  • Recurring thoughts of death or suicide.
