Journey of hope

Journey of Hope will be affording 12 breast cancer survivors from underprivileged communities in SA, the opportunity to have breast reconstructive surgery. Read more.

In an attempt to break down the stigmas surrounding breast cancer, fifteen women, all breast cancer survivors, will take to the road on Harley Davidson motorcycles as part of the 2009 Journey of Hope Breast Cancer Ride.

This campaign acknowledges that while breast cancer is a reality, if detected early enough, it is treatable. Unfortunately due to ignorance and a lack of information and awareness, many South African women die of breast cancer, each year.

Breast reconstructive surgery for 12 ladies
During the 2008 campaign, JOH raised more than R1 million through sponsorships from companies and donations from the public. They aim to use this money to sponsor 12 ladies who have undergone a mastectomy following breast cancer and who can’t afford it, the opportunity to have breast reconstructive surgery.

Candidates can now apply for breast reconstruction surgery. Since JOH will not be able to sponsor every application, careful attention will be paid to the criteria of the applications.

The organisers emphasise that this is not a competition and the expert panel, who will be presiding over the selection of the candidates, will be taking the given criteria into consideration and not the penmanship or the presentation of the application itself.

The 2009 JOH ride will take place from 17 - 24 of October 2009 between Cape Town and Johannesburg.
