Crystal therapy can be easily combined with other modalities such as Shiatsu, Reiki, reflexology and massage, delivering you a double- or even triple-whammy treatment, depending on the skills of the practitioner.

“A typical crystal healing session lasts anything between thirty minutes and two hours,” says Crystal Healing therapist and Reiki Practitioner, Markus van der Westhuizen.

“The client lies down, fully clothed and is then packed with various stones selected by the practitioner for healing. The crystals are then left on the body for as long as is necessary. The practitioner can also perform a crystal massage, which involves applying pressure in certain areas with stones cut and polished specifically for this purpose.”

He explains that the client’s consciousness will then be drawn to that particular area, where negative energy will be released. The client will also be given advice as to what crystal would be appropriate to use after the treatment, for further healing to take place.

Markus believes that caution must be exercised with an inexperienced or novice crystal user as some crystals work quite intensely. For example, malachite (a green stone) works in conjunction with your heart chakra or electromagnetic field, and will bring out any deep-seated emotional issues you might have to the surface, he says.

The crystal healer will be aware of what’s needed and will monitor the client’s response to the crystal by checking their heart rate and breathing patterns.

According to Markus, some stones, such as the apache tear crystal, produce ‘tears’ as a signal that negativity has been released. “I have also known crystals to crack and break, which is usually an indication of negativity being taken away from the client in a sharp and very direct way,” he says.

Note, however, that the field of crystal healing remains highly controversial.
