Through the ages, essential oils have been popular remedies for all kinds of ailments, including insomnia, stress and treatment of skin conditions. But even though the health-boosting qualities of these oils are well documented, it is important to note that some can be harmful when used incorrectly.

Take action:
Do not use essential oils internally; keep the oils away from your eyes; do not apply when sunbathing; if you suffer from high blood pressure, avoid hyssop, thyme, sage, rosemary and eucalyptus; if you have epilepsy, steer clear of fennel, eucalyptus, hyssop and sage; during pregnancy, use half the usual recommended dosage and avoid essential oils that help with scanty, irregular or excessive periods, like basil, cedarwood, peppermint, rosemary and sage; if in doubt, consult a qualified aromatherapist.
