As a child, Pelzer suffered terrible abuse at the hands of his mother. This account of what he went through is graphic in its detail: he is beaten, starved, forced to eat his own vomit and to swallow soap and ammonia. It's hard to read.

The story told through the eyes of the child takes us through happy times and then into his horrific abuse, made all the more painful to the young boy since his mother has singled him out from his brothers. It's an excruciating exploration of how self-worth can be destroyed, and how madness can prevail in pockets in 'ordinary' people's lives. And Pelzer's tremendous will to survive is massively inspiring.
