Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a chronic, debilitating illness characterized by recurrent, intrusive, unwanted thoughts (obsessions) which cause anxiety and/or irrational, ritualistic, repetitive behaviour, which a person feels compelled to perform (compulsions).

There is growing evidence that particular brain regions and chemicals are involved in mediating OCD. It is unknown to which extent this is an inherited disease, although there is growing evidence that genetic factors play an important role in the development of OCD.
The MRC Unit on Anxiety disorders is conducting research into the genetic underpinnings and other causes of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD).
If you have been diagnosed with OCD or think that you may be suffering from it, you can make a valuable contribution to research by taking part in the study.
What it entails
The evaluation takes approximately three hours during which time the following will be done:
An interview
One blood test
A short computer test
Family tree drawn up
All interviews are strictly confidential. Interviews can be conducted anywhere in South Africa. Patients will get feedback via an annual newsletter that captures our most important research findings. This comprehensive assessment is cost-free and referrals for treatment can be made if required.
