Never leave pets alone with toddlers; if your baby is crawling, hold your dog in a sit/stay position; train your toddler to respect pets from an early age; always be there for immediate supervision, not only by telling your child not to do this and that, but also showing him which parts of the pet can and cannot be touched; teach your child not to disturb the pet while it's eating or playing with toys; children should also not insist on running after the pet when it's trying to avoid them; trim your cat's nails regularly; and remember that every pet has limits to its tolerance, even the kindest ones.
