Take your pet for regular check-ups; set up a schedule of immunisation and de-worm your pet every six months; keep your pet clean and well-groomed (don't forget to clip its nails regularly); wear gloves when you handle pet litter, or clean cages, fish tanks and baskets; don't use pet litter as fertiliser in your garden; wash your hands with soap and hot water for 20 seconds immediately after handling pets or their litter; keep pets out of the kitchen; don't allow pets to eat raw meat, dig through the rubbish or drink from the toilet bowl.
