Shanti, a dog that spends her time playing with mentally challenged people, won this year's SPCA Mutt of the Year contest.
Her proud owner, Irene Modlim, a volunteer for Pets for Therapy, was delighted she won at the SPCA's largest annual fund raising event, which took place on Sunday 18th March, at the Old Constantia School for Boys in Tokai.

The Spirit Within
The theme for this year was the Spirit Within - the way your dog has that special kind of something that makes him/her who he is. The way he makes you smile, the way he nudges you when he wants something, his determination and charm. The way he looks at you and you just melt - Shanti stood out amongst the many hopefuls with her spotted coat and gentle smile.
As reigning champ and canine ambassador for the SPCA, Shanti will attend the various charity events during the year as the official SPCA mascot.
Another dog that stole the show was Veteran winner, 15-year-old Ridge, donning sunglasses and a very cool attitude. The crowds were very impressed with Shaun Dunt who came along to the contest despite being in crutches. His 3 month old Mary won the Pup category.
"It was an incredible day and I was delighted to see so many happy, healthy dogs, said Cher Poznanovich of the SPCA.
"Sadly, we so often see the neglected and abused dogs. We are extremely grateful for the success of this type of event, which supports what we do in order to continue our efforts in helping the unwanted ones."
