Toby, a gorgeous Irish Terrier Cross, won the 2006 SPCA / Hill’s Mutt of the Year Show on 25 February, in Cape Town.
His proud owner, Kristen van der Hoven of Newlands, was delighted and said that Toby is affectionately known as "the flying coconut" due to his unique bristly coat.

SPCA to benefit from show More than 350 hopeful hounds entered this year’s show, which raises much-needed funds for the Cape of Good Hope SPCA’s work with sick, abandoned and neglected pets. Runners-up were Shanti, a 5-year-old mutt from Bloubergstrand owned by Irene Modlin, and Sparkey a young multi-coloured beauty, owned by Maria Vianello from Kenilworth.
Carla Rabbitts of Hill’s Pet Nutrition was one of the judges on the day. She said “Hill's has been very proud to sponsor this fabulous event, which raises money for a good cause and is a delightful outing for your pooch. It really was a fun day for the whole family.”
It is always such a pleasure to see the heartfelt love that these dog owners have for their pets”, said Cher Poznanovich, Fundraising Manager of the Cape of Good Hope SPCA. “Especially because we often see neglected and abused dogs. We are extremely grateful for the success of this type of event, which supports our efforts in helping the unwanted ones.”
Toby will attend the various charity events during the year as the official SPCA mascot and canine ambassador.
To charm the audience and humour the occasion Soli Philander as MC for the day. He said that he had proudly adopted his own mutt from the SPCA and purposely didn’t bring her along as she would’ve won hands down.
