517 people have recently died in a cholera outbreak that hit eight West African countries, and 31 259 other cases have been reported in the same regions.
According to a World Health Organisation report, the rain season and the population relocations are alleged to be the main causes of the outbreak.

Guinea Bissau is said to be the country with the highest rate of mortality from this lethal disease, with a total of 172 deaths. It is followed by Senegal with 231, Guinea with 32, Liberia with 29, Mali with 20, Niger with 15, Mauritania with 10 and Burkina Faso with 8.
Meanwhile, the WHO, in partnership with the international and national health ministries of these regions, is assisting these regions, by giving technical support, helping with case management, providing water purifiers in order to minimise the outbreak.
