The most effective way for travellers to avoid the disease is making sure that all drinking water has been boiled and that no food is eaten that has been exposed to open air. A new oral cholera vaccine, which is said to be more reliable than injections, is now available, but even this does not provide complete protection.
Meanwhile, a technical team from the World Health Organisation is currently in the regions affected by the outbreak, in order to help alleviate the humanitarian crises that are also affecting the two regions.
