Don't lick your lips to moisten them. Unfortunately, even though saliva soothes momentarily, it eventually dries out the lips, irritating them even more. This vicious cycle leads to lips that are painful, cracked and bleeding.

Take action:
The lips and the surrounding skin must be protected from saliva. For milder cases, keep the lips protected with an emollient such as petroleum jelly. When this doesn't work, a small amount of over-the-counter strength hydrocortisone cream may reduce the inflammation, allowing the petroleum jelly to be more effective.
